Small early stampless folded letter postmarked at station 23 Sailland (unable to find community location. needs further research). Note No. 42 center left of front page.  Apparently the correspondents numbered their letters so they would know if one was lost in transit.  The writer also references receiving No. 47 from the addressee.  Vertical mark running from middle top to bottom is the postage charge.

Interesting cover from a number of viewpoints. First, addressed to Judge Samuel R. Russell. Second, note difference in size and color of the two Scott #65 stamps. The left stamp is considerably smaller due to close perfs. The right stamp is much lighter in color, possibly rose. And finally, there is an incomplete Hillsborough PA dead post office postmark -- a premium DPO. Judge Samuel Riddle Russell, b. 21 June 1801 Gettysburg PA; lawyer, judge, graduated Princeton.

Letter from George Lewis to Joel Griswold, a home builder in Vermont, informing him there is no work around Boston for his son.  The building trades are slow with lots of young men use hanging around. Letter is in good condition with no tears except for small spot where seal was broken with is on a blank page.
