archie-gunn-early-postcard-of-attractive-woman-red-hat-with-banner ARCHIE GUNN EARLY POSTCARD OF ATTRACTIVE YOUNG WOMAN IN RED HAT WITH BANNER

Unused postcard in pristine condition. Archibald "Archie" Gunn was born October 11, 1863 in Taunton, Somersetshire, England  He received his earliest art training from his father, and at Tottenham College in Staffordshire. In 1878 he attended the Calderon Art Academy in London. In 1880, Gunn was commissioned to paint a portrait of Lord Beaconsfield, which was presented to Queen Victoria. In 1883, he designed posters and costumes for theatrical productions of Gilbert and Sullivan in London. He used the pen-name "Chicot" for some of his theatrical posters. In 1889, Gunn traveled to America; settled in Manhattan and quickly began his American career as a commercial artist.  In 1890 he became an editorial artist for The New York World newspaper, and also illustrated the magazine Truth. The greatest public renown for Gunn came from his posters, calendars, prints, and postcards of beautiful girls, which were fashionably displayed in homes throughout the nation at the turn of the century. Archie Gunn died on January 16, 1930.

Handwritten date in lower left corner. Early style return address vertical at left along with Department of Public Instruction Official Business corner card upper left. Sacramento postmark along with large pie wedge fancy cancel. Opened roughly at right but stamp not damaged.

boston-massachusetts-1849-stampless-folded-letter-to-new-bedford-liquor-shipment BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS 1849 STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO NEW BEDFORD MA REGARDING LIQUOR SHIPMENT

Boston postmark with 5cts in dial.  From the size of the liquor order, Otis must have been a wealth New Bedford resident or merchant.  Brandy, port wine, Sicily wine, and sherry were ordered along with 1000 Sucero cigars. The companion note mentions a discount applied to all except the cigars.  Could use more research.  SFL is in good condition.

NEW YORK CITY 1859 FOLDED LETTER WITH SCOTT 26. LARGE, FULL DATE POSTMARK.

Nice looking brownish stamp. Note is to Cannon Brothers of Philadelphia, placing an order for 5 cases of liquorice paste. There is some aging as is to be expected in items this old.

PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND 1846 STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO REV. BADGER, NEW YORK

The letter is addressed to the Rev. Milton Badger, secretary of A.H.M.S., New York. The initials stand for the American Home Missionary Society.  Rev. Badger was Associate Secretary of the Society and received field reports from missionaries on a regular basis. There is no content to this SFL. However a note on the side indicates it came from Miss E. A. Alwood, Providence on behalf of Rev. H. Foote.
