BRIDGEPORT CONNECTICUT 1848 STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO VERGENNES VERMONT

Very interesting 2 1/2-page letter from Emma Curtis to her Aunt Alsow Roscoe.  Emma seems to have a family business because she says she read a letter from her aunt while she was sitting at the stand between her husband Mark and a cousin.  She talks of a sick grandmother a visit from her father and discusses visiting and/or moving to Vermont.    She inquires about Aunt Nancy.  Nice long letter, easy to read.  Condition very good for this era; having only a hole where the seal was broken.

Bufords Bridge South Carolina 1848 manuscript postmark stampless folded letter to Franklin New Hampshire BUFORD'S BRIDGE SOUTH CAROLINA 1848 MANUSCRIPT POSTMARK STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO FRANKLIN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Addressed to Mr. Joseph Scribner, the three-page letter is from his brother lamenting the passing of their father and that the writer was unable to return home before the parent passed.  In the letter, he describes his travels and teaching positions he has held, including a lucrative position at the private school of a planter. "During these three years, I paid my expenses, purchased about $200 worth of books for my private library, and put out $400 at interest." He was also employed at the Academy of Buford's Bridge "and shall clear about $500".  He loves the South and plans to spend the rest of his days there. He does intend to visit New England but "After so long a residence in a more genial clime, my constitution would hardly bear the bleak winds that flow from the snowy mountains and ice bound coast of New England. Well written and easy reading.  Letter shows some wear and it appears a small portion at the bottom of page three has been clipped off.

c. 1770 DAMN MAMBRINO ETCHING NO. 4731 - ART. ENGLISH ETCHINGS c. 1770 DAMN MAMBRINO ETCHING NO. 4731

DAMN MAMBRINO -- MT Bunbury del. J" Brethertonf. [c. 1770] -- The etched satirical caricature portrait of a man seated in a chair, looking with great wrath and disgust to his left, grasping his stick with one hand, and clenching his fist on his knee with the other. He is gouty; his face is puffed with wrath and anger. He has not missed a meal. A dog squats timidly at his knee hoping he is not the cause of the anger. Mambrino was the name of a racehorse. The person represented here had doubtless lost money on a race. This plate is No. 4731. A rare and highly collectible item.
