Letter is written on behalf of the sister of Matthew Charles H. Bickford, Company B, Massachusetts 2nd Regiment Vols. who was reported killed in action.  Letter is to the company chaplain asking "where he was buried and whether by  his friends or the Rebels."

Private Charles H. Bickford of B Company, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was born on March 1844, and died on May 3, 1863 in Chancellorsville, Virginia, at the age of 19. Images of him are available at: https://www.loc.gov/item/2010650360/

newport-new-hampshire-baptist-stampless-postal-history NEWPORT NEW HAMPSHIRE POSTAL HISTORY STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER FROM MARTHA TRACY TO REV. LEONARD TRACY, BAPTIST MINISTER

Rev. Leonard Tracy was a Baptist minister who served as pastor to congregations is New Hampshire and Vermont. January 21, 1824, he was ordained pastor of the Claremont New Hampshire Baptist Church. He also served as pastor of a Baptist congregation in Burlington Vermont.  This letter, addressed to East Bethel, Vermont, was written by his wife Martha and brings him up to date on the happenings of the last week.  Her affection for him is quite clear at the outset when she opens with "My dear, dear Husband"  She closes the page and a half missive with concern about her husband's well being because the weather has been very bad.  Excellent and easy read. Slight separations where page folds cross. Full early Newport postmark.

Elie Beatty was president and cashier of the Hagerstown Bank. Beatty was a prominent citizen of Hagerstown, Maryland, having served as assistant postmaster, bank president, and a member of the Hagerstown Academy's board of directors. Postmark is light and appears to be no outer rim.  However, 1830 date precedes no outer rim postmark.  Under magnification, tiny lines from an outer rim are visible.

These are high denomination (8 silver coins) 1920s cigarette tax stamps (Level 5) from Canton.  Each represents 5,000 cigarettes. The four stamps are pasted on a cardboard backing; two to a side.  They are in poor condition. Very scarce.
