DAMN MAMBRINO -- MT Bunbury del. J" Brethertonf. [c. 1770] -- The etched satirical caricature portrait of a man seated in a chair, looking with great wrath and disgust to his left, grasping his stick with one hand, and clenching his fist on his knee with the other. He is gouty; his face is puffed with wrath and anger. He has not missed a meal. A dog squats timidly at his knee hoping he is not the cause of the anger. Mambrino was the name of a racehorse. The person represented here had doubtless lost money on a race. This plate is No. 4731. #13 of 273. A rare and highly collectible item.

December 30 postmark. Early Scio postmarks are hard to find. Addressed to M. D. Whitney, West Danby, NY. Cover opened neatly at right. Only fault is that someone mounted it at one time and there are two half-hinge remnants on the back center. These can be removed with a q-tip and water. email if you would like to see a scan of the back.

hanover-nh-1830-stampless-folded-letter-chas-haddock-to-boswell-stevens NEW HAMPSHIRE: HANOVER 1830 CHAS. HADDOCK TO BOSWELL STEVENS STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER

This stampless folded letter is addressed to Boswell Stevens. A prominent member of the Pembroke, NH, community, he was a lawyer and one of the founding fathers of Pembroke Academy (still in operation today). He was a friend of, and corresponded with Daniel Webster.  The sfl was sent by Charles B. Haddock. See bio below. Significant historic postal history item.  No content in sfl.
Charles Brickett Haddock was a New Hampshire educator, author, politician and civil servant. Fresh and clean cover with excellent, full Hanover postmark.
Haddock's mother Abigail was a sister of Daniel Webster. Haddock graduated from Dartmouth College in 1816 and at Andover Seminary in 1819. He returned to Dartmouth, where he was professor of rhetoric and belles lettres from 1819 until 1838, when he became professor of intellectual philosophy and political economy until 1854. He was chargé d'affaires for the United States in Portugal from 1850 until 1854. Except for his time in Portugal, he served as a Congregationalist minister in Windsor, White River, Norwich, West Lebanon, and Quechee.[1]
Thoroughly versed in public law, he represented Hanover[2] for four years as a Whig in the New Hampshire legislature. There he introduced and carried the present common-school system of the state, and was the first school commissioner under that system. He was a promoter of railroad construction in New Hampshire.

seldovia-alaska-rare-1925-registered-cover-to-bokenas-sweden ALASKA - SELDOVIA RARE 1925 REGISTERED COVER TO BOKENAS, SWEDEN

Rare cover from a sparsely populated alaskan village.  Strip of four Scott #557 stamps used to frank cover.  Backstamps indicated it went through New York Foreign mail route. Includes Bokenas receiver.The town's original Russian name, Seldevoy, translates to "Herring Bay", as there was a significant herring population prior to rampant overfishing early in the 20th century.  Until the development of a more complete road system in Alaska, Seldovia was an important "first stop" for ships sailing from Seward, Kodiak and other points outside Cook Inlet. At one time Seldovia was home to over 2,000 residents, but today fewer than 300 persons reside year round.
