SWITZERLAND: GENEVA 1846 STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER FROM US BANKER GERARD HOLSMAN COSTER Gerard Holsman Coster was the son of John Gerard Coster. Apparently he carried on the family banking tradition for the letter discusses major financial transactions in the planning. Coster lived in Europe, principally in Paris. Historic item. John Gerard Coster (August 1762 – August 8, 1844) was a Dutch-American merchant who served as president of the Bank of the Manhattan Company. Coster was born in August 1762 in Haarlem, Holland. Coster came to the United States from Haarlem in the Netherlands shortly after the Revolutionary War and founded the family fortune with his brother through the mercantile firm, "Henry A. & John G. Coster". They became owners of numerous vessels and traded with the East and West Indies, and exported American commodities to Europe. In 1813, he was made a director of Bank of the Manhattan Company, which had been founded by Aaron Burr in 1799. In 1825, Coster was made president of the Manhattan Company, succeeding Henry Remsen upon his death. Coster was also a director of the Phoenix Insurance Company for many years. |

INDIANA & OHIO: 1865 NEW ALBANY INDIANA LETTER TO PENNSYLVANIA MISSENT TO YOUNGSTOWN OHIO AND FORWARDED TO YOUNGSVILLE PENNSYLVANIA Letter inside envelope is from New Albany, Indiana, and is addressed to Olds & Brother in Youngsville, Pennsylvania. However, it ended up in Youngstown Ohio where the postal agent postmarked the cover and then wrote missent and fwd by hand on the envelope. The letter is from M. P. Robinson, corner of Water and lower Fouth Streets and includes an order for five pumps and tubing. The writer goes to lengths to request that the order be shipped by train or boat...whichever is cheapest. Good reading. |

NEW HAMPSHIRE: HINSDALE 1841 MANUSCRIPT CANCEL STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO PLYMPTON MASSACHUSETTS Clean stampless folded letter with sharp and full Hinsdale, New Hampshire, manuscript postmark. Ivory Soule writes to William Soule about family matters, especially his wife's illness. Additional information about family history was added, in pencil, in 1957 by a relative. Interesting that letter was sent FREE. Could not find any reference to Soule being a postmaster. |

MICHIGAN: CARROLLTON 1882 COVER AND EXCELLENT LETTER TO SAND LAKE MICHIGAN. Nice early oval postmark on this cover from a small Michigan township to a desirable destination. Long four-page letter is from Wesley Kilborn to Charles Reston telling him that he has applied for and won the position of principal of Carrolton High School and is excited that the job pays $15 a month more than he was previously making. The only problem, he states, is that: "is it a very rough school as this place is nearly all French Canadians and Irish. In fact, there is more French spoken than English. This place is then you see what I call a devilish hard hole and the scholars and their teachers have regular fights in the school room." Much more to read and enjoy. |
