Clean cover with red double circle Boston Postmark and black paid killer. Addressed to Major Charles P. Chandler, 1st Massachusetts Regiment, Camp Hookeer, Budds Ferry, Washington, DC. Chandler was a leader and prominent Bostonian. The 1st Massachusetts Regiment had two majors, Charles P. Chandler and Gardner Walker. Major Chandler was killed leading his regiment in a charge at the Battle of Glendale. Chandler was the scion of a wealthy family who abandoned his university posting when his country called. In his time as major, Chandler led his regiment in the battles of Bull Run and the Peninsula Campaign, where he was killed in action. After his death Gardner Walker, a sailmaker in Boston was promoted to Major and led the regiment for the rest of the war, through Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Petersburg among others. By wars end the 1st Massachusetts had suffered 8 officers and 134 men KIA/DOW and 79 deaths of disease.

Red postmark along with PAID and 5. Clean condition.  Content is interesting letter regarding a woman who was probably in debt to Osgood. A person named Stearn writes to say that a Mrs. G. White has gained employment and wishes to pay for items being held by Osgood and hopes that they haven't been sold.  More details in easy to read letter.
