CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS TO CANANDAIGUA NEW YORK EARLY COVER. SCOTT#26 STAMP CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. REV. DAGGETT

Clean stamp and cover. Nice item. No content. Addressed to Rev. O. E. Dagget for Mrs. Dagget.

The December number of the " National Preacher," contains a Sermon, entitled, "The time of the End uncertain," by Rev. O. E. Daggett, pastor of the South Congregational church, Hartford, Ct. The object of this discourse appears to be, to prove that we can never know with any certainty, the time of the Second Advent; and therefore, that no confidence can be placed in any of the evidence upon which the near approach of that event is predicated. It is singular that while a century ago, the whole Protestant church were endeavoring to acquire all the light possible upon the prophecies of Daniel and John, yet, now, the same church is equally anxious to throw darkness upon those prophecies.

EXTRACT FROM A LETTER Of Rev. O. E. DAGGETT, D.D

Canandaigua, N. Y., Jan. 3, 1863.

Mt Dear Sir :—That so young a State as Iowa has a Historical Society is noticeable, but the sooner such operations are begun, the better. I was much pleased with that of Wisconsin, where I was, at Madison, in May, 1862. Though only eight years old, it had already done, what could not so well be done later, for the State, besides having some things of interest in all similar collections.

I enclose you two specimens from my Colonial and Continental money, for your Historical Society. See the motto of the latter. Yours, sincerely, O. E. DAGGETT.

c. 1770 DAMN MAMBRINO ETCHING NO. 4731 - ART. ENGLISH ETCHINGS c. 1770 DAMN MAMBRINO ETCHING NO. 4731

DAMN MAMBRINO -- MT Bunbury del. J" Brethertonf. [c. 1770] -- The etched satirical caricature portrait of a man seated in a chair, looking with great wrath and disgust to his left, grasping his stick with one hand, and clenching his fist on his knee with the other. He is gouty; his face is puffed with wrath and anger. He has not missed a meal. A dog squats timidly at his knee hoping he is not the cause of the anger. Mambrino was the name of a racehorse. The person represented here had doubtless lost money on a race. This plate is No. 4731. #13 of 273. A rare and highly collectible item.

BROOKLYN NEW YORK 1940 MISSIONARY POSTAL HISTORY COVER TO PALLIKONDA INDIA - MORENWEISER TYPE 8 CENSOR MARK BROOKLYN NEW YORK 1940 MISSIONARY POSTAL HISTORY COVER TO PALLIKONDA INDIA - MORENWEISER TYPE 8 CENSOR MARK

Nifty cover from the outbreak of World War II. Cover was sent to Rev. Francis Felip, a Salesian missionary priest serving in India.  New York World's Fair postmark.  Most significant is the Not Opened By Censor mark. It is a Morenweiser Type 8 NOT OPENED BY CENSOR oblong censor steel stamp from the Mumbai Censor Station with station code D, struck by the examiner having chop number 2.  The mark when used in Mimbai CS from May 1940 to February 1941, has been recorded with censor numbers ranging 1–17 but all but 10% were marked by censor No. 3, making this mark particularly rare.  The mark, which was applied to mail deemed innocent...bank mail, missionary mail, etc., was in use less than a year.
