ELLENVILLE NEW YORK 1837 MANUSCRIPT STAMPLESS FOLDED LETTER TO EGREMONT MASSACHUSETTS

Year:

1837
New York

A wonderful very long letter with parts written by William Stoddard, Marilda Stoddard and Mary Eliza Stoddard, of Ellenville New York to William and Betsy Stoddard of Egremont Massachusetts. Letter is in superb condition. Correct 18 3/4 cent rate. Manuscript postmark. At top left, Mary starts with a long fern design. She comments on her poor health and moves into inviting Aunt Celina (who apparently just got married) to visit with her husband.  Much more family news.  Mary concludes with a poem to Aunt Celina Spery: May virtue that heavenly dove; Dwell in your heart ever be your love; And may conduct here below; Nothing but virtus (sic) beauties show.  William Stoddard also extends and invitation and says all except Mary have been well.  He references Augustus (Stoddard?) and a Turner Warden. Marilda provides a weather report (the spelling is hers): We had along storme this weak of rain hale and snow but it look more pleasan this morning and Phinehas is prepareing to go to ellensville this morning with a load of shingl for a neighbor. Excellent slice of life in the 1830s.
