NAUGATUCK RAILROAD 1850 STAMPLESS COVER WITH LETTER TO NEW BRITAIN CONNECTICUT "BOY STRUCK BY LIGHTENING". SEE OTHER PLATT LETTERS

Year:

1850

Light Naugatuck RR postmark and large 5 rate mark in red on this cover to New Britain, Connecticut. Letter originated in Watertown and is from Jane to her sister Elisa. It is three pages of easy to read news of the family and community.  The almost casual nature with which sickness and death are discussed is certainly a sign of those early, difficult times.  Jane writes: Ann Merriman died two weeks ago tomorrow by filling up in the throat. had been sick about two months. was carried into the church sabbath day and funeral serman preached by their new minister Mr. Reed from New York. they have hired him for a year." "A boy of Mr Leonard who lives over by Stheven Atwood was struck by lightening on Monday, May 5th and lived but half an hour. he was an only son about 14 years of age. Polly Dayton is married to a Mr Fenn."  It's a happiness and tragedy letter sentence by sentence. Great reading. THERE ARE FIVE LETTERS IN THIS GROUP.
