HAGERSTOWN MARYLAND POSTMARK ON WORCESTER BRAND SALT ADVERTISING COVER HUYETT MARYLAND

Year:

1894
Maryland

Nice red advertising imprint on this cover from M. H. Huyett, general merchant, Huyett MD. Perhaps town was named after his family. Cover opened roughly at right.

Joseph Duncan partnered with the New York City sales agency of Nash, Whiton & Company and formed the Worcester Salt Company in 1894 near Silver Springs MD. Salt was shipped from the plant in rail cars as local freight service was less expensive than having a centralized salt plant serving the entire country. The Morton Salt Company purchased the Worcester Salt Company in 1943, making it one of the many producing plants throughout the country using the national Morton label.
