1841 letter is in very good condition. Heavy and bold Southport WisT postmark. Letter is from a sailor named Morgan to a John Richardson of Albany, NY. It reads: I take much pleasure of informing you that I am at my journeys end safe & sound. Maria and the little ones are all well and located in a beautiful country village and the family are quite happy and contented and more than that we came in company with several families- all Baptist brethren. Some were baptized by Mr. Welsh when he first had charge of Green St. Church. Two of them have been deacons of a church since in Courtland (sic) County and attended protracted meeting with you and send their best respects to you. The capt of the steamboat gave us a cabin pass and the owners have got a fine schooner for me. I was offered two good situations as mate but could not accept of them on account of my family. My wife was treated very kindly indeed and the capt of the steamboat made the chamber maid take care of the children. We were only 4 days coming up the lake and had beautiful weather. The place is settled by Baptists and among all the public houses not one sale any as heat -- all cold water. The first thing I do will be to forward my earnings to you to pay my debt. Give our best--love to our dear mother and all your kind family. Tell mother her Sarah is just saying she wants to see her. She acted like a little lady all the way and was not the least trouble. Little Sue still calls for Nan Nan. Marie wishes to be remembered with affection to her and says she will write in a few days. Ask brother William to answer this and direct here. May heaven bless you and at the throne of grace remember-- Morgan
Great letter from a family moving west.
