Two letters written on February 23 and March 2, 1900 from Elisabeth Johnson Hassell to Belle Johnson (possibly a sister). Both letters are lengthy (see scan of first letter) and contain excellent descriptions of the events of the times. The first comments on an upcoming wedding and that Elisabeth's husband Harry has "been to Greenfield today and got himself white duck pants and an awfully giddy sirt to wear in the play...Winifred is now able to walk...Mrs. Boyden left Monday at 4 p.m. It was dreadful lonely at first...Mama has been up every afternoon...I can not be lonesome with all the books and letters to read and the cat and bird to talk to"...(and much more). The second letter has more news of the day: "It poured incessantgly all day and all the sheets and lawns were deep with water...I worked on my bed quilt. I finished one...Today I walked up to Mrs. Wing's...At Mr. Cushing's lecture on the 'Lost Atlantis' there were 29 people present...Mrs. Warner died this morning. She had been sick about 10 days...I expected Minnie Bissell by this time, but she is ill"...(and much more).
