Extremely interesting 1852 letter.  Filled with intrigue and with sexual overtones. It reads:

Dear Joseph,

I got a letter today, I did, I did. And to be frank with you I must say that I would willingly pay your passage to California if you would be willing to go. Now certainly Joseph I cannot see you, no I cant--dont laugh nor even smile at this. Why I had almost given up all thoughts of seeing you for some months. After receiving your last letter (before today) I commenced going to a painting and drawing school--thought I might perhaps in that way renew my age. But without jesting and getting to the point, I am not so well prepared to see you as I could wish and really hope you will be retained in New York until I can get a 12 1/2 ct calico dress made. Now for further orders which I beg you to obey. I desire that you would not make yourself known to my brother. He will not I think recognize  you. Just call for a room and I shall take the liberty to rap at your door very soon after you arrive. By so doing you will be free from an embarrassing situation and be able to survive.  Please write as soon as you get this about what day you think you will be here and I will be on the watch. I do want to see you just a little. I pity you sincerely for I believe you will come like one approaching an execution block.

Thursday morning -- It is snowing most beautifully this morning a delightful climate this. No doubt you will be more pleased then eve with it. I think that you would like to stop over and see Betty and Rebecca and I would give you lease to do so if you would promise me not to make love to Betty.  I'll scribble no more. Very likely I shall have a few things to say when you get here. Now  mind you, do not laugh in my brother's face and he will not detect you. One word more -- be sure than put this interesting document in your hat after you read it.

Thine, Hetty

Condition very good.
