This letter is in very fragile condition and it would be best to use archieval tape to bind the fold breaks. However, the full letter is there and very easy reading. The content in phenomenal...a recitation of local activities over a number of days. There was a "fire at Wheelwright Shop which consumed it with all its contents...the platform & Bridge was burned to ashes. Mr Weatherbee's house took fire several times but ownng to the unwavering effort of the citizens it was saved. The red shop on the west side of the bridge took fire but was saved. The Baptist Meeting House also. It was a gloomy time." There is much social news in this extensive letter. Here is a sample: "Martha Ann is marrying the blacksmith who buried his wife six weeks ago. Martha had three offers, a minister, a farmer, a young physician and she saw fit to refuse all." It also notes later that they had planned to live in the Wheelwright Shop that burned. She also writes a friend has a newborn and regrets "God sees fit to take her children from her in infancy". There is news of other marriages. She notes the recipient is located near an Indian settlement and wishes she could be with him instead of in Saxtons River. Strong manuscript postmark. 25-cent ratge to Illinois. Mailed March 3 and received March 27.
